Using the Menu System:
The pull-down menus selections on the menu bar have related areas beneath.  By either clicking on the selection or using the ALT + hot key the sub menu selections will be visible.  Most of the selections have a hot key also.  When selecting a sub level option only press the hot key to initialize it.  When using on line help for the application there will be a Menu Path showing you the steps starting at the top most menu selection.  Each sub menu selection will be separated by an inverted line like this |.  For example  Maintain|Agenda means, first click on Maintain, then click on the Agenda selection.

Windows:
The term Window refers to any defined group of information.  There can be many different types of information on the window but all windows will have a command button allowing the window to be closed.  A window can be thought of like a piece of paper.  Where the application is a desktop, all of the open windows are like pieces of paper.  These papers can, and will, be on top of one another.  Many windows can be opened while in the program. If you have a number of windows open the most recently accessed window will be on top.  Windows opened earlier will be underneath and if smaller can be hidden by window on top.  Remember the window which currently has focus will be on top.  To see the list of open windows click on the Window selection from the Main Menu Pull-Down.

Dialog Boxes:
Dialog boxes are windows opened because
  • You made a selection that requires user intervention, or
  • the running application requires more information, or
  • the application needs to communicate a message to you.

This information could be to warn you of a potential problem or to tell you a mistake has been made.  When you call your support person about a problem you have to tell that person exactly what the error message reads.  There can be no hope of useful help without having the correct information.  It is also extremely important you know what you were attempting to do at the time the error was generated.  Unless the information is available there is no way your support person can make an informed decision and help you.
